2021 Wrap Up

So where does one start when writing the wrap up for the 34th Annual?

I guess from the beginning. We noticed that the weather forecast was nasty for our first scheduled day but was really great on the day we were scheduled to leave. So, we made a few phone calls to: a) change the rental house dates one day to the right, b) reschedule linens and grill to correspond, c) move our first golf day to the new ending date, d) convince Bill to change his flights to support new dates, e) get Dan onboard. Easy. Result: 8 days of spectacular golf.

To keep all idle hands busy instead of getting in trouble, we six learned the game of Hearts. The boize let the Host win the most games.

Senior tees and soft fairways equaled out to a long enough venue to please most mortals.

Pat claimed he threw his back out early in the week. He hobbled around, told stories of pain, acted like it was the end of the world but then shot lights out just like always.

We played 8 different courses and liked most of them. The Stevenator particularly liked the last course due to lack of white stakes and water. (There will be a kick back to scheduler to fold it in again.) The demand to play Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in 2022 was overwhelming. We’ll see. Statistically almost impossible in blind card draws for grouping, Stev and the Host were not in the same three some for the first six days. We had to manually assign them to the same group for the last day so that Stev could witness the Host’s golfing magnificence once during the week.

The Host proved he couldn’t putt a ball into a barrel at two feet one day, then the next couldn’t miss and scored low round of the week. Bill tried valiantly to best that score and take medalist honors for the week with his final round but came up a bit short on both. Even three putters couldn’t get Curt in the mix.

However, the most meaningful measure of golf excellence is a player playing against himself and trying to improve. The best way to measure this is to run a week-long contest using historical SCAGI handicap as the benchmark. We call this the Alabama game, devised by statistician Stev and first used on the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama. The hands-down winner of this bet was none other than Dr. Curtis White, Esquire, Summa cum Untouchable. He won the monetary contest and miraculously lowered his handicap a full two strokes.

It took until almost the last night to spill a drink. Good trend, we can improve on that.

Best I can tell, we watched the following movies:

  • The Wolf’s Call
  • Avengement
  • Home Front
  • Pain & Gain
  • Gemini Man
  • Ravage
  • Ava
  • Entrapment
  • Honest Thief
  • Plus one more

Dining

  • Curt once again proved why we call him “The Chef”. Magnificent spreads! Maybe the best strips ever eaten at SCAGI.
  • Dan astounded us again with his patented Bird.
  • Pat demonstrated why we call him the “Bread Broiling Magician”.
  • Stev and Pat prepared succulent breakfasts that we couldn’t wait for.
  • The overwhelming favorite, of course, was the Host’s boiled hot dogs.

That’s a short recap of a wonderful week, wonderful camaraderie, and super golf at the 34th. There are rumors of a 35th.
